Sea transport decreased by one per cent in September 2021

The goods volume of foreign sea transport was in total 8.1 million tonnes in September 2021. Sea transport decreased by one per cent from last year's September. Exports increased by three per cent and import volume decreased by six per cent. Altogether 0.7 million persons were transported in passenger traffic, which was less than half of the level before the coronavirus pandemic.

Transports decreased by one per cent

In September, the majority of sea transports were transports of general cargo. A total of 1.5 million tonnes of general cargo were transported. The next most transported goods were oil products, 1,1 million tonnes, and ores and concentrates, 0.7 million tonnes.

The most import-dominated types of goods were crude oil and timber. The most export-dominated types of goods were paper, fertilisers, pulp, wood pulp and waste paper, sawn timber, cereals and plywood and other wood panels.

Measured by volume of goods transported, the largest ports were, in order, Sköldvik, Helsinki, HaminaKotka and Rauma. Transports at Sköldvik consisted almost entirely of oil-related products and chemicals, while transports at HaminaKotka and Rauma consisted mostly of paper and other forestry products, while general cargo was mostly transported through Helsinki.

The volume of foreign shipping traffic totalled 8.1 million tonnes. A total of 2.4 million tonnes, or 30 per cent of all sea transports, were transported in containers and transport units. Altogether 1.5 million tonnes of goods were transported in transport units and 0.9 million tonnes in containers.

Of the goods transported in transport units, 0.8 million tonnes were transported in lorries, 0.6 million tonnes in trailers and 0.1 million tonnes in other transport units. In addition to the transport units used for goods transport, 144,183 passengers’ cars and 1,204 buses and coaches were transported.

A total of 61,998 containers were transported, which corresponds to 108,367 TEU units.

Altogether 0.7 million persons were transported in passenger traffic

A total of 671,159 persons were transported in passenger traffic in September 2021. In all, 302,751 passengers between Finland and Sweden, 350,435 passengers travelled between Finland and Estonia and 11,548 passengers between Finland and Germany. Compared with September 2020, the number of passengers increased by 36 per cent in September. Compared with September 2019, the number of passengers was, however, just 44 per cent. In September 2021, a total of 3,018 passengers of foreign cruise ships arrived in Finland.
